UNFAIR TACTICS?

To the Editor:

It amazes me that in considering whether a competing project should be opposed, your article (“Competition Breeds New Tactics,” January 2002) never takes into consideration whether the project is really in the best interest of the community and the environment. Shouldn’t that be the critical ethical issue? The fact that this is omitted shows why many are cynical about the development community.

BLAME THE TAXMAN

To the Editor:

I was delighted to read in your cover story (“Where’s the Boom,” February 2002) the mention that the Internal Revenue Service is one of the main reasons retail sales have been disappointing, despite the potential for consumer spending among the baby boomers.

So little media attention is paid to this obvious fact. Instead, we hear about such things as “job insecurity,” “consumer debt” and even “the weather” as reasons for weak retail sales. While all of these do have an effect, if most Americans would just look at their own household budget, they would see that personal income taxes routinely exceed all other expenses combined, including mortgage payments!

Please write more on this topic, especially in this crucial mid-term election year.
