INGRAM EXPECTED TO BE NAMED ICSC CHAIRMAN

John M. Ingram

The nominating committee of ICSC’s board of trustees has announced its intention to nominate veteran retail real estate executive John M. Ingram as chairman for the 2001-02 term.

If confirmed as expected at the Spring Convention May 21 in Las Vegas, Ingram will become the 42nd chairman of the 39,000-member trade association. He will succeed Robert L. Ward of Westcor Partners, Phoenix.

Ingram is currently vice chairman of The Mills Corp., Arlington, Va., creator and developer of the value-oriented megamall concept. He also serves as chairman of its executive committee. He joined the Mills board in 1994 when the company went public as a REIT. Mills currently operates 10 Mills megamalls, one Block entertainment/retail center and one community center totaling 16 million square feet in nine states. Five more projects are under development.

In addition to his role at Mills, Ingram is CEO of an independent consulting firm that provides advisory services to the retail, real estate and REIT industries. Prior to 1993, he spent 21 years as an executive with Marshalls, the off-price apparel chain, which he helped grow from four to 500 stores.

Ingram would be one of only a few ICSC chairmen whose careers have centered on retailing companies, rather than exclusively on shopping center development. He said his background would be an asset in his role as ICSC’s chief volunteer officer. "Most of my life has been on the retail real estate side, but I recognize that the shopping center industry is a partnership of the developer, the retailer and the consumer," he said. "All three components must work together."

On a personal note, Ingram said he appreciated the "confidence placed in him by his peers. This comes at a perfect time in my career," he said. "It’s an opportunity to give something back to an industry that has been enormously generous to me and my wife." Ingram’s association with ICSC dates back to 1973 when ICSC had fewer than 5,000 members. He has served the organization in a variety of roles, including trustee (12 years, six on the Executive Committee), vice president, state director for New England, chairman of the Spring Convention and a member of the faculty and speaker at numerous ICSC meetings in North America and abroad. Ingram resides in Andover, Mass., with his wife, Pat.
