COSTCO WHOLESALE

Costco Wholesale will open a 148,000-square-foot store this fall in Randhurst Shopping Center. The center, in the Chicago suburb of Mount Prospect, Ill., is managed by Urban Retail Properties. The Costco unit is replacing a J.C. Penney. This marks the third mall anchor spot taken by Costco.

THE SHARPER IMAGE

The Sharper Image says it plans to raise its store count by as much as 20 percent this year. At press time the total was 149.

BARNES & NOBLE

Barnes & Noble signed leases to open two 25,000-square-foot stores in suburban Phoenix next year. One unit will go into Happy Valley (Ariz.) Towne Center and the other inside Crossroads Towne Center, Gilbert, Ariz. Both centers, owned by Vestar Development, are scheduled to open next year.

NOODLES & COMPANY

Fast-casual restaurant chain Noodles & Company says it plans to enter California with 56 units to be rolled out over the next seven years. The Boulder, Colo.-based chain currently has 70 units in nine states.

J.C. PENNEY

J.C. Penney is opening a 93,000-square-foot store in Developers Diversified Realty Corp.’s Riverdale Village. This 840,000-square-foot open-air center in Coon Rapids, Minn., is about 11 miles north of Minneapolis.

TIFFANY & CO.

Tiffany & Co. says it will launch a new chain this year devoted to pearls and aimed at high-end malls and lifestyle centers. The company wasn’t disclosing at press time what the chain will be called or how many stores it will have.

SHOPKO STORES

ShopKo Stores is spending $100 million this year to open 22 new units and renovate 60 existing ones. It had 361 stores in 23 states at press time.

McDONALD’S

McDonald’s is introducing a line of books, clothing, toys and videos called McKids. The items will hit retailers in the United States, Australia, Canada, China, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan by the spring.

STAGE STORES

Apparel retailer Stage Stores has closed on its $167 million acquisition of the 136-unit Peebles chain. The deal brings the total number of its units to 520.

THE CONTAINER STORE

The Container Store has opened its first New York City store. The company now has 29 units in the United States.

PANDA RESTAURANT GROUP

Panda Restaurant Group says it plans to open more than 160 Panda Express Chinese restaurants next year in the Southeast and on the West Coast. The Rosemead, Calif.-based chain now has about 600 units.

BUILD-A-BEAR WORKSHOP

Entertainment retailer Build-A-Bear Workshop has opened its first U.K. store, in Sheffield, England. The chain has 153 units in the United States and Canada.

THE HOME DEPOT

The Home Depot has renewed its sponsorship of the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Teams through 2008. The retailer is employing 204 competing athletes at its stores.

SPORT CHALET

Sport Chalet opened its first Northern California store, a 45,000-square-foot unit in Antioch, 45 miles northeast of San Francisco. It’s the 30th store for the chain, which has units in Southern California and Nevada.
