Marketing maven Charlotte Ellis dead at 56

Charlotte Ellis, SCMD, a pioneer in shopping center public relations and a longtime, active member of ICSC, has died. She was 56.

Ellis was a winner of an ICSC Distinguished Service Award, a CMD committee member, a frequent MAXI judge and a founder of ICSC’s public relations task force. Before starting her own firm — Cary, N.C.-based Ellis & Others — Ellis held senior marketing positions at Raleigh, N.C.-based Konover Property Trust and Dallas-based L&B Realty Advisors. Projects she was involved with include the redevelopments of North Hills, in Raleigh, and Tysons Corner Center, in McLean, Va. “She was so passionate about public relations,” said Susan Valentine, SCMD, senior vice president of marketing for The Macerich Co., Santa Monica, Calif.

Possessing a sharp mind, broad knowledge, a soft Southern voice and a gentle wit, often aimed at herself, Ellis could focus a diverse group of creative professionals on a goal, said John Gerdes, SCSM, CLS, vice president of asset management of L&B. For many, she was the voice of reason who could see to the heart of any problem, professional or personal.

Others agreed. “Charlotte had a way of listening to all the impassioned sides of an issue. When everyone else had calmed down, she would give an erudite synopsis of the pros and cons and share her sage advice,” said Judi Lapin, president of Lapin Consulting Group, Costa Mesa, Calif. “It was always the best solution.”

Ellis died in her sleep of a heart attack in November.
