In mid-December (after SCT’s press time) a Borders and an Auntie Anne’s pretzel shop were to open in Houston Intercontinental Airport while Brooks Bros. was to go into Washington Dulles International Airport.

PARADIES EXPANDING

Airport retail operator The Paradies Shops has been awarded contracts to bring stores, including Bass Pro Shops, Brooks Brothers and PGA Tour, to airports across the country. Locations include the Boise (Idaho) Airport (three stores); Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (one store); Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (eight stores); Houston Intercontinental Airport (17 stores); Milwaukee’s General Mitchell International Airport (seven stores); Southwest Florida International Airport, near Fort Myers, Fla. (five stores); Tulsa International Airport (six stores); and Will Rogers World Airport, in Oklahoma City (seven stores). The company expects the retailers to open by the end of the year, with the exception of Fort Myers, which will open by the end of next year.

JFK TERMINAL GETTING NEW SHOPS

A joint venture between Aer Rianta International and Saveria JFK is bringing 14 new stores to Terminal 4 in New York City’s Kennedy Airport, which is managed by JFK IAT. Among the stores already opened are The Brew (which sells liquor-themed items accessories), DKNY and Tie Rack. The rest of the stores, a mix of fashion and beauty retailers, are set to open by the spring, bringing the total number of shops in the terminal to 38.

BALTIMORE-WASHINGTON AIRPORT SEEKING RETAIL OPERATOR

The Maryland Aviation Administration is reviewing bids it received in October for the retail contract at the Baltimore-Washington International Airport. The administration gave no timetable for choosing a winning bidder. Current tenants include Body Shop, The Museum Co. and Wilson’s Leather.

HMSHOST SIGNS DEALS

Airport retail developer HMSHost Corp. and The Houston 8 Team, a group of investors that includes former basketball star Clyde Drexler, have been given the contract to bring 17 stores to Houston Intercontinental Airport (The Paradies Shops also operates stores there). Sports store Clyde Drexler’s Sports Scene, local gift shop Destination Houston, and a Fox News Channel Newsstand are among the incoming tenants. HMSHost and Houston 8 have a seven-year contract with the airport. HMSHost also got a seven-year management contract at the Edmonton (Alberta) International Airport, where it will operate five newsstands, some locally themed shops and other attractions.
