2100 KALAKAUA MAY GIVE ALA MOANA SOME COMPETITION

Beverly Hills has Rodeo Drive, and New York City has Fifth Avenue. Now Honolulu has 2100 Kalakaua Ave., a group of eight freestanding, three-story “retail townhouses,” which is creating some competition for the luxurious Ala Moana Shopping Center.

The developer, Honolulu-based Honu Group, opened the 110,000-square-foot luxury center in November. Its tenants include Chanel, Gucci, Tiffany & Co. and Yves Saint Laurent, each of which occupies its own building. The center also showcases Hawaii’s culture and flora, with, for instance, a hula mound for Hawaiian music and dance. “We believe it is important to support Hawaii’s arts and cultural organizations,” said Mona Abadir, a Honu Group principal. Honu Group, which specializes in the development and management of retail and mixed-used projects, also owns King Kalakaua Plaza, an 80,000-square-foot center in Honolulu, and has helped develop more than 23 retail centers on the U.S. mainland.
