ICSC’S FIRST CONFERENCE ON OPEN-AIR CENTERS DRAWS A CROWD

About 340 professionals attended ICSC’s first ever Conference on Open-Air Centers in Chicago in November. The two-day meeting drew senior executives to discuss topics critical to those who own, manage or do business with open-air centers. Subjects included the evolution of lifestyle centers, tenant bankruptcy and second-generation big-box leasing.

Among the speakers was David Bernauer, CEO and president of Walgreen Co., who described the drugstore chain’s growth and unique strategy.

“The amount of networking and idea exchange was pretty phenomenal,” said Brad Hutensky, president of the Hartford, Conn.-based Hutensky Group development firm and co-chairman of the ICSC Committee on Open-Air Centers. Plans are in the works for a second conference in 2004.
