Ice: Beyond Cool
Pacific CentreVancouver, British Columbia
As part of Vancouver's annual arts awareness month, Pacific Centre hosted 10 performances of a dance/music/theater piece on the heart-wrenching subject of teen suicide. Although an unconventional setting for such a dark, difficult event, Pacific Centre recognized the central role it plays in the lives of many local teenagers -- the targeted audience. The production, "Ice: Beyond Cool," was created by, for and about teens to address such issues as family breakdown, peer pressure, relationship problems, job issues and school responsibilities. The shopping center setting was used to maximum advantage, with the performers using the escalators, the aerial walkways, and a stage built over a fountain. A discussion period followed each performance, with crisis counselors on hand. Fact sheets on teen suicide were also available at each performance. The sold-out, critically acclaimed show was the most successful and rewarding special event in the center's history. It garnered considerable coverage in print, radio, and television.
