YMCA Healthy Kids Day
Northgate MallChattanooga, Tenn.
In the last decade, poor eating habits, high-calorie fast foods, and lack of activity have helped double the number of obese children in the United States. In response, the YMCA developed a national program to help children become more active and healthy. Northgate Mall was eager to host the daylong event as a way to build a family-friendly image, since its shopper profile is somewhat older than the national average. It used the event to kick off the spring selling season and herald the arrival of the Easter Bunny. Forty organizations were represented at the event, each teaching a health or safety lesson in a fun, hands-on way -- with kids doing everything from making first-aid kits to scaling towers. All activities were free, and every child received a goody bag filled with health tips, healthful snacks, a water bottle, a coloring book and crayons, and a toothbrush and toothpaste. In addition to games, classes, crafts and demonstrations, there were plenty of prizes and giveaways. More than 1,517 children and 2,483 adults participated in Healthy Kids Day at Northgate Mall.
