True Giving
Northland VillageCalgary, Alberta
To balance the number of charitable events directed at assisting children during the holidays, Northland Village developed a program to help the impoverished adults living in Calgary shelters and safe houses. The center's team solicited donations of clothing, gifts and cash by raising awareness among retailers at tenant meetings, targeting businesses and community groups with phone calls and letters, and launching a multimedia ad campaign to involve the general public. The clothing and gift drive stimulated a generous response, with daily contributions to the collection booth at the center. The donations were packaged in shopping bags that had been decorated by more than 500 students from local elementary schools and displayed as part of the center holiday decor. On Christmas Eve, 40 volunteers from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police delivered the gift bags to 550 homeless people. The program warmed many hearts throughout the community, and also drove up traffic and sales for December by 17.5% and 9%, respectively.
