AMC Entertainment, Loews Cineplex to merge

Cinema chains AMC Entertainment and Loews Cineplex Entertainment Corp. announced today that they plan to merge. The combined company, to be called AMC Entertainment Inc., will be based in Kansas City, Mo. It will own, manage or hold stakes in some 450 cinemas totaling about 5,900 screens in 30 states and 13 countries.

The parties did not disclose financial details of the deal, which they expect to close within the next nine months.

AMC chief Peter C. Brown will lead the merged company. Loews' parent, LCE Holdings, will merge with AMC's parent, Marquee Holdings.
