COUNTDOWN TO SPRING CONVENTION 2005: L.A. MIXED-USE

Trying to top New York City's Time Warner Center may be a colossal undertaking, but that's exactly what Related Urban Development is looking to do. At its booth at ICSC's Spring Convention next week, the firm will display a model of its plan to redevelop a 10-acre site at Grand Avenue in Los Angeles into a massive (at least 2 million square feet) complex containing retail, office, residential and hotel space.

“The surge in residential [development] in downtown Los Angeles is dramatic,” R. Webber Hudson, executive vice president of Related, told SCT Newswire. The 400,000 square feet of retail planned for the space includes a cinema, restaurants, art galleries, a health club and specialty stores.

The permitting process is still under way, but the company is phasing the development, with openings to begin in 2008. The project will include three anchors and some Main Street retail, along with residential, office and hotel space. The ground-breaking is set for the fall, and the openings begin in late 2007.
