EU BREEAM

The ICSC Sustainability Working Group evaluated certification standards for sustainable building and selected the method developed by the Building Research Establishment (BRE). They are working with BRE to develop a pan-European BRE Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) for use in the assessment of new and refurbished shopping centres throughout Europe.

The BREEAM quality standard was identified as the most appropriate standard for use in Europe to meet the needs of developers and European regulations.

The BREEAM Standard environmental assessment criteria on land use and ecology are being adjusted so that it is suitable for use in countries across Europe, many of which have different environmental criteria, based on their climate and geographical location.

Members of the Working Group are reviewing the criteria for assessment, and collating information on local legislation. A year-long pilot assessment of retail projects will start in July 2008 and the BREEAM standard will be launched in Autumn 2009.

Developers interested in using the standard and National Green Building Councils are invited to participate.
