Shopping Centres Make a Difference Humanitarian Award, Sub-Saharan Africa
The Shopping Centres Make a Difference Humanitarian Award was established by the ICSC Foundation to recognize exceptional contributions of shopping centres in Sub-Saharan Africa to communities in which they are located. It reflects a cardinal belief that shopping centres can and do make a difference in their communities and encouraged shopping centres to carry out programs to benefit the broader society. In 2007 ICSC’s World Summit was held in Cape Town, South Africa and the ICSC Foundation wanted to reward a shopping centre in the community. The Mall at Rosebank received a commemorative plaque and The South African Police Services Widows and Orphans Fund received a $10,000.00 donation from the ICSC Foundation.

Rebuilding Together - Hurricane Katrina
The Passion Team: Helping to Rebuild the Gulf South
About 300 shopping centre managers, marketing directors and leasing specialists donned red and yellow t-shirts, jeans and hard-sole shoes on October 14th 2007 to help rebuild New Orleans homes, schools and churches still in disrepair from the ravages of Hurricane Katrina.
The Passion Team: Helping to Rebuild the Gulf South Event was organized as a volunteer day in conjunction with the 2007 ICSC Fall Conference. AmeriCorps, the Louisiana Serve Commission/Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism, Rebuilding Together and other charitable groups coordinated the effort. The shopping centre executives traveled by bus to 21 sites throughout the flood zone, where teams of 10 to 20 volunteers worked together to tackle demolition and construction, painting, yard work and general cleanup. Mayor C. Ray Nagin, who addressed the conference, thanked the volunteers.
This ‘volunteerism’ activity was created to help ICSC members give back to the community prior to the Fall Conference. The ICSC Foundation donated $10,000 to Rebuilding Together to assist in the Gulf South.
