The Nordic Council of Shopping Centers (NCSC) was founded in Helsinki in 1985 as a non-profit organization promoting the interests of the shopping center market in order to strengthen the position of the centers as an integrated part of society. As a pan-Nordic organization with members from Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden it creates a strong network for professionals in the shopping center industry. The aim is to ease the communication and interaction between investors, developers/owners, tenants and the community, to provide information and market related education.
NCSC is the second largest council in Europe and currently (2000) has over 450 members ranging from the south of Denmark to way above the polar circle in the north of Norway. The common language of the organization is Swedish as in its publication CenterNytt, a periodical of four issues a year. On a Nordic scale there are two major conferences and one study-tour abroad each year. There is a pan-Nordic education for Advanced Center Management every second year. In addition there are national meetings and conferences within the four different member countries. The Nordic shopping center industry in 1996 comprised of over 473 centers exceeding 5000 sqm totaling more than 7.000.000 sqm of GLA.
