Associação Brasileira de Shopping Centers is a non-profit organization founded in 1976, devoted to strengthening the shopping center industry in Brazil. It has been active in the diffusion of technical knowledge and support to professional development. Seminars and conferences are regularly organized by ABRASCE, which also publishes a specialized magazines. The Council’s Library has many publications and books, some translated from the ICSC . In addition to this, it promotes surveys and releases industry figures. Legislative actions, press relations and community campaigns are also among the principal activities of ABRASCE.

In order to become members of ABRASCE, shopping centers in Brazil must meet requirements to acquire the ABRASCE Seal, a quality certification issued by the Association. Presently, Brazil counts 257 member shopping malls, spread all over the country, totaling 66 million square feet of GLA, with 40,800 stores and 475.000 job positions. In 2003, sales were US$ 10.5 billion, representing 18% of retail sales in the country, excluding sales of automotive products. Estimated growth in 2004 is 16% over 2003.
