The Shopping Centre Council of Australia was formed in May 1998 to give a stronger and clearer voice to the shopping centre industry. SCCA is the retail policy arm of the Property Council of Australia.
SCCA has an advocacy and information role. Its key advocacy task is to roll back restrictive legislation at the Federal, State and Local Government level. This includes trading hours, tax, lease laws and planning rules.
It also informs politicians, government officials, the media and other opinion leaders about the shopping centre industry's contribution to the economic and social life of Australia.
There are 1,338 shopping centres in Australia ranging from large regional centres of more than 100,000 square metres of retail space and generating sales of around $500 million a year down to smaller, supermarket based centres of around 5,000 square metres generating sales around $30 million.
SCCA members own around 9 million square metres of retail floor space or about two thirds of the total retail floor space in Australian shopping centres. The SCCA's 'reach' through the industry, however, is even more extensive through its two manager members, Jones Lang LaSalle and Savills.
