FUTURE IMAGE ARCHITECTURE COMPETITION

ICSC FUTURE IMAGE ARCHITECTURE COMPETITION
INVITES PARTICIPANTS TO THINK OUTSIDE-THE-BIG-BOX

Backed by the success of its inaugural debut in 2009, the International Council of Shopping Centers, Inc. (ICSC) 2010 'Future Image' Architecture Competition will challenge industry visionaries to conjure up the shopping center of the future. This year participants are tasked with contemplating the future impact of Big Box buildings on local economies and anticipating viable and innovative new uses for these structures in the future.

From its earliest days, the shopping center has been analyzed and improved upon by myriad individuals, inviting constructive criticism and ultimately helping it attain new levels of success. All of these individuals, whether they are architects, designers, owners or developers have inspired momentous positive change within the industry. Now, to inspire these visionaries to continue to push the envelope of shopping center creativity ICSC is asking them to think “outside-the-big-box” by imagining new ways to position and utilize the Big Box building.

Entrants will be challenged to re-envision the large scale buildings typically occupied by department store anchors in suburban shopping centers. The competition seeks ideas for adapting these structures to new retail configurations, mixed use and even non-retail uses. Solutions will be judged on the following criteria:

  1. Innovations that enhance the long term viability of the shopping center.
  2. Creative proposals for adaptive re-use of these structures.
  3. Concepts that will compliment and enhance the shopping experience.

The ICSC ‘Future Image’ Architecture Competition is open to all architecture professionals worldwide who are also members of ICSC and encourages individuals to progress our current understanding of the shopping experience. Ideas are not limited to design and architecture and may include any aspect—specific or general—of the retail continuum.

Entries into the competition will be judged by a panel of leading professionals comprised of: Ellen Posner, first architecture critic of The Wall Street Journal, New York, N.Y.; Brooke Hodge, New York Times online design columnist and former Curator of Architecture and Design at the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art; and Alfonso Miranda Márquez, director, Museo Soumaya, Mexico City, Mexico. Additionally, the judges will be part of a panel discussion following the competition that will be moderated by Jeffrey J. Gunning AIA, LEED® AP, committee chair, ICSC Future Image Architecture Competition and vice president, RTKL Associates Inc., Dallas, Texas.

Awards will be presented for the following categories: Re-Envisioned Shopping Environments; Re-Envisioned Mixed Use or Non-Shopping Environments; Green; and General Brilliance and Innovation.

All submissions in the competition will be exhibited in the Future Image Gallery during ICSC's annual convention, RECon, the largest gathering of the retail real estate industry in the world, May 23-25, 2010 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Winners will be announced at the Future Image Architecture Competition Awards Session, on Tuesday, May 25, 2010 from 2:30-3:30 p.m. and featured in an article in ICSC's Shopping Centers Today.
