14:45 SETTING THE STAGE
A VIEW OF THE GLOBAL ECONOMY - AUDITORIUM

The global economy is in bad shape. The world is in recession and we are facing the most severe economic downturn since the second World War. More than ever it is now necessary to find an international approach in addressing the crisis. By identifying the successful measures of the various stimulus packages around the globe and by announcing and implementing them in a globally concerted action we might still have a chance to avoid the worst scenario.

09:45 KEYNOTE SPEAKER: RETAIL AND THE CITY - HOW SHOPPING CENTRES PROMOTE EUROPEAN CITIES - AUDITORIUM
European cities have always been centres of culture, politics, life and retail. After decades of suburbanisation and imminent desolation of the inner city, a current urban renaissance is about to revitalise the cities. Many examples show that professionally managed and integrated shopping centres can give valuable and sustainable impulses to this process. The shopping centre industry should therefore take even more responsibility and leadership for urban development.

15:30 2008 AWARD WINNERS CASE STUDY - THE BEST OF THE BEST - FOCUS ON RENOVATION AND REVITALISATION PROJECTS
- AUDITORIUM

Since time began, retail has been the catalyst for urban development: whether as the Greco-Roman Agora or Medieval market square centrepieces from which the city radiated, or as the appeal of main streets essential for the social economic irrigation from one city quarter to another. Today, a new generation of urban shopping centres are fulfilling this historic role bringing life back to our city centres after decades of "out of town" shopping, and renewing with peoples need to return to their roots. Using case studies from past ICSC European Award winners, our session sets out to show how three different cultures with contrasting histories deal with this global problem - how to use the strength of retail to regenerate our city centres - integrating community and cultural heritage and satisfying our basic need to return to our roots and rediscover our "tribes" and cities.

The projects showcased are:
  • Entre Deux, Maastricht, Netherlands - Multi/3W
  • Princesshay, Exeter, UK - Land Securities
  • Manufaktura, Lodz, Poland - Apsys Group

16:15 - 17:15 EUROPEAN SHOPPING CENTRE AWARDS CEREMONY - AUDITORIUM
The ICSC European Shopping Centre Awards are the supreme awards in European retail property. From a shortlist of Finalists, outstanding schemes are selected as winners in recognition of particular achievements or features of special interest. Every year since 1975, ICSC has recognised excellence in new and refurbished shopping centres throughout Europe with the presentation of the prestigious and highly sought-after ICSC European Shopping Centre Awards. The ICSC European Shopping Centre Awards bring international visibility and recognition to all finalists and winners. They are an exceptional opportunity for developers, owners and managers to display their competence, and showcase their most innovative projects. The award is not an award for design, although design is one of the judging criteria, but a statement of the overall excellence of the project taking into consideration amongst others: the retail mix, commercial performance, customer services, and the centre’s successful integration into the surrounding infrastructure.
