9:45 AM – 10:15AM Retail Overview: Asia Today And Over the Next 5 Years
Asia is undoubtedly the most talked about region and one that promises immense opportunities, yet, filled with challenges. Retail sectors in Asia have seen good times, and in some markets, great times. Retail real estate outperformed all other sectors in India and China witnessed record growth in its retail sales last year. The question is, can Asia sustain this phenomenal growth led by India and China? Where are the hot markets and why should you remember to pack your mine detectors?
Speaker:
Sunil Devmurari, Account Manager - Asia Pacific & Australasia, Euromonitor International, Singapore
10:15 AM – 11:15 AM Morning Tea Break in the Exhibition Hall
11:15 AM – 12:15 AM India: Where are the Real Opportunities?
According to IMF, India’s economy is set to grow by a whopping 7.9%. U.S. and European retailers and investors are looking to emerging markets to lift them out of the doldrums in their home markets. And India is looking incredibly attractive. However, the seemingly protectionist measures regulating the retail sector may mean that the retail trade may not develop as rapidly as one would hope. Where are the opportunities and will they come fast enough to sustain the interest?
Panelists:
Ashu Pakhey, President, Subhiksha Trading Services, India
Aswhin Puri, CEO, Property Zone, India
12:15 PM – 1:15 PM China: China after 2010 – “Outside Looking In”

3:15 PM – 4:15 PM Vietnam: Walking the Talk
Vietnam has been dubbed the “next big thing” in Asia. The macro-economic indicators appear to speak for Vietnam and the market is clearly buzzing. There is a keen anticipation towards Vietnam’s entry into the WTO and the impending 100% foreign ownership rule could potentially make Vietnam the place to be. The big “BUT” is whether it can deliver on its promises and present itself as a prime market of choice for investors and operators.

16 OCTOBER 2008, THURSDAY — DAY 3

8:00 AM – 9:00 AM Registration
9:00 AM – 9:45 AM Luxury Retailing in the Developing Markets: Where’s the Upside?
It is safe to say that there is a huge following for many of the luxury brands in Asia. Some would even say that some brands command a loyalty nearing cult status. An elite group of luxury brands are entrenched in all the major cities in Asia and continue to expand into the emerging markets. What is it that attracts these brands to a particular market, what do they look for and as markets mature, where would be their upside?
Speaker:
Radha Chadha, Managing Director, Chadha Strategy Consulting and co-author of “The Cult of the Luxury Brand: Inside Asia’s Love Affair with Luxury”, Hong Kong
9:45 AM – 10:45 AM Retail Opportunities and Strategies in the Gaming Environment
How do we move from the attraction of the casinos to other forms of entertainment and social activities that will further increase consumer spending? Singapore steers clear from mentioning casinos and gambling in the news and calls its two upcoming projects “Integrated Resorts”. Macau’s Cotai Strip promises to deliver more than just more gaming tables and slot machines – it intends to present the visitor with a string of excellent restaurants, world-class acts and shopping experience. This is indeed easier said than done. How exactly do you steer the perception away from just gaming and how do you create the right mix to draw the crowd?
Speakers:
David Sylvester, Vice President - Retail Development, Sands Retail Asia, Hong Kong
Richard Hamilton, Vice President - Development, Taubman Asia, Hong Kong
10:45 AM – 11:30 AM Morning Tea Break in the Exhibition Hall

1:45 PM – 2:45 PM Sustainability Strategy: More Than Just a Buzzword
Sustainability is a growing and urgent necessity. In the U.S. and parts of Europe, it has begun to yield concrete, bankable results, particularly against the bottom-line impact of spiraling energy costs. The question is how do we get these initiatives to take off in Asia? What steps must the industry take?
Invited:

Berny Ng, Director, ARUP, Hong Kong

3:30 PM – 4:00 PM Afternoon Tea Break in the Exhibition Hall
4:00 PM – 5:00 PM Green Retailing: Sustainability Practices and Positive Customer Value Proposition - How Do They Go Hand in Hand?
We have witnessed a raising concern for safeguarding the environment on issues such as climate change and global warming, carbon footprint, renewable energy, conservation and recycling, etc. for the past decade. Recent research and studies have underscored this concern and is considered one of the top 10 risks facing businesses now. Obviously, there is a strong business case in helping to protect the environment. And going green in business is not just a socially responsible initiative - it also has considerable positive economic advantages and marketing benefits. Many companies found that their green investments are fostering stronger bonds with increasingly environmentally-conscious customers. This is proven for many retailers embarking on green retailing strategies. You can start by fixing stores with energy-saving lighting; buying recycled office and operating supplies; bring-your-shopping-bag; doubleside printing office documents; etc. However, it is now more than that. What is next for sustainable retailing? Can it also be translated into positive customer value proposition?
Moderator:
Steven Goh, Chairman, Retail Asia, Singapore
5:00 PM – 5:15 PM Closing Address
Michael P. Kercheval, President & CEO, ICSC, USA

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES

Did we mention that this is a serious business platform? It’s not all business and no pleasure. We happen to know how to throw a mean party. In 2006, the Gala Dinner adopted the theme of “Shanghai Tang” and 2007, we took it to “Bollywood”. The Bollywood dinner featured an original musical specially commissioned for the Asia Expo, entitled The Romance of the Taj Mahal.

But before all the business begins, we welcome you to the event with a little reception and a pre-opening view of the exhibits.

Finally, if you happen to have your companion or family with you, we’ll help you take care of them with various offerings of local tour packages and the opportunity to also join in the Asia Expo social activities.
