MAPONYA MALL (Opening September 2007)
Maponya Mall is located in Soweto, a vast, sprawling urban area located 15 km southwest of Johannesburgs central business district. Often referred to as a city-within-a-city, Soweto is in fact bigger than many cities. Approximately 40% of the Sowentan population falls in the total trade area for Mayponya Mall. Now they will be able to make their retail purchases inside Soweto rather than outside of it. This is Sowetos first megaregional shopping centre at 65,000 sqm in extent and housing 250 tenants, including the entire spectrum of food, fashion anchors and nationals, with a full entertainment and franchise restaurant mix including a cinema multiplex. The centre is being developed in partnership with well known black entrepreneur Richard Maponya. The growth in the consumer market in Soweto makes this development one of the most significant investments in the Zenprop portfolio. Anchor tenants include all of South Africas prime retailers including Woolworths, Pick n Pay and the Edcon Group.
Ample customer parking is situated at the front of the building. In addition, catering to the large volume of patrons who will arrive by taxi, there will be a central roadway spine for drop-offs with a taxi rank adjacent to it. Future plans exist for the construction of a Bara Link railway terminal that will open directly into the upper cinema level of the mall, capturing a significant daily commuter market in excess of 17,000 people.
JABULANI MALL
Jabulani Mall is located on Bolani Street off Koma Road, in the traditional heartland of Soweto and is surrounded by the most densely populated residential node within Soweto, which comprises some 68,000 households within a 3 km radius. A further 170,000 households exist in the secondary trade area. Jabulani Mall consists of a single level building of approximately 50,143 sqm with a gross leasable area of 43,000 sqm and has ignited a strong cultural component, which will increase by the development of the adjacent amphitheatre as well as adjoining vacant properties. These developments will become the catalyst for further growth and development in the Jabulani node and enhance tourism to Soweto.
Jabulani Mall is the centre catering for shopping and entertainment and has also become a destination for Soweto inhabitants and tourists. It is also a focal point within its context for the surrounding society to shop, socialize and relax. The mall has been designed around major anchors fed from three major entrances. The middle entrance leading to the centre features restaurants and fast foods externally creating a focal point for night time trading and extending the shopping experience.
